Alliance Benefits For Non-Members?

Hi, everyone. I have a question regarding travel with two airlines in the same alliance even when you are not a member of any of the airlines in it. See, I'm trying to think of ways to get to Germany in a few years and I was thinking of this plan: OMA-ORD on United, and then ORD-FRA on Lufthansa. Nobody I am related to directly is a member of either of these airlines or any others in the Star Alliance. Even if one were to do this, would there be any benefits at all for choosing airlines that have an alliance? (I know it seems silly to plan for the trip three years from now and all that, but this is merely an idea, nothing else.)

The only important thing to consider is: Interlining. You as a pax expect to show up at OMA and check in with UA for all upcoming sectors, receiving all boarding passes and get to see your luggage again only at the final destination (if local laws allow this).

If in contrast you were to fly OMA-ORD on UA and continue on another carrier (still on one ticket) you might need to go to a transfer desk at ORD and get a new Boarding Pass, as UA was not able to issue one at OMA. (Luggage usually gets checked-thru even in such a case).

Even worse is the situation if you fly OMA-ORD and ORD-FRA on two different tickets (PNR's): You will be at the mercy of the first airline ti decide if they check-thru your luggage all the way to FRA. If not, you will have to pick up your luggage at ORD and make a completely new check-in at ORD.

Does above satisfy your curiosity ? If not, please refine your question a bit.

Yes, that covered what I was wondering. Thanks.
