Many years ago, I was at an airshow in New Jersey when a Cessna 172 crashed into a tree killing three people aboard.
A week ago, I was at Madrid Barajas Airport waiting for a connecting Iberia flight when a Spanair MD80 crashed killing 154 people.
The New Jersey crash seemed to rile up people more than the MAD crash, where most people seemed to care more about when their delayed flights would take off.

I have been at an airfield when a glider sufferes a very heavy landing verging on crashed last week. The front seater in the K13 slipped a disc but thank god noone was more seriously injured or killed. The aircraft suffered some structural damage in the nose.
I seriously hope that is as bad as I will ever be a witness to.

In early May of 1968 I was in one of three search parties of six people per party, looking for a twin Piper that crashed in the woods east of the Pellston Michigan airport . Our party found it...and four bodies. No survivors.
Thats was not a good evening and hasnt been...........since.

JFK, Eastern Airlines 727 /Rockaway Blvd, result of microburst, all perished...forget the date, (getting old)...what a mess, local looting, the stench was worse than the visual...my cousin was one of the first firemen on the scene...he went to pull a woman away from flaming wreckage and her arm came off in his hand...she died and he quit.
At airshow at FOK, two formula one, or five?...either way, just finished pylon race as I was climbing into glider...both impacted midair over my head...one spun in and exploded, he perished three hours later, the other went directly into the woods...lost both legs.He survived.
Worked TWA 800 recovery as photographer, was oout on Penobscot coast guard ship with media...was more grulling the following day when I went surfing at smith point park and found fingers and a boot with a foot in it. All kinds of airframe debris all over water line...yet people just played in the surf and played volleyball right next to TWA foam cups that were 1/2 their original size from the explosive heat shock...spooky stuff.

Im old too. Thats why I research...
June of 75...flight 66 landing on 22L but hit the freeway embankment. 11 survived, 2 crew 9 pax.
113 people did not.
Blame it on a micro burst at the end of the runway during landing......toss in some windshear
and you have a page one disaster.

Working hard,......no retirement,......no time to research...thnx for doing the work...that was a mess....it was a hazy hot humid day till.......................bang!...hit approach towers short of road, they found parts fifteen feet under ground...I believe that was the event that put the term "MICRO BURST" on the map...j

I had just picked my parents up from BDL and was driving home when an AA MD-80 clipped trees short of the runway and made a hard landing with both engines flamed out. We were driving past the end of the runway and all sorts of emergency vehicles were racing out to the plane that had come to a stop. It was a nasty night....near gale winds, we didn't know what had happened, but heard about it the next morning. A friend of mine actually saw the plane from her house coming in on approach....she made not how low the plane was.....much lower than normal.

Was supposed to fly home from a meeting from MCO to JFK on B6 on November 12, 01 when my wife called from New York and said that an AA flight had just crashed after take-off from JFK (AA 587) and she begged me not to fly back and drive/take the train as the memories from 9/11 were still very fresh and initial reports suspected another terror attack.
JFK was shut down for hours so our B6 A320 could not take off from JFK to get us, so as far as I remember we had about an 8-hour delay that afternoon/evening getting back to JFK. B6 handled the delay extremely well at MCO and served Pizza and soft drinks at the gate.
Still remember the silence on board and the awkward feeling on approach to JFK. Believe our flight got in to JFK around 1:00 AM in the morning.

Yep. Crash took place less than 100 yards from where I was-and I slept through the entire event. Pilot flying a high performance experimental made too sudden a power setting change at a critical point in the climb out and torque rolled into the runway-both men aboard the plane died instantly.

I was at HWV when a glider crashed into some trees; pilot was okay. Not sure if this counts but I was at ORD when the AF A340 overran the runway in YYZ and I remember seeing it on the t.v.'s in the terminal.
I was at JFK that day hoping to catch a final glimpse of Concorde as they were retiring them at that time. I heard someone say something about an accident on the runway having just happened. They pointed toward 4L and I could see, even through the heavy drizzle, this poor MD-80 with her nose on the ground not looking too good. I stuck around long enough to see them haul the plane off the runway with it's nose on a flatbed truck towards the AA hangar.

I like to hang out at BUR and plane watch. I was there with a friend on the top of the parking structure watching when the Southwest 737 over ran the runway and crossed the street ending up in a gas station. It was a shocker!
A few months later we went back and as we were watching we saw all the fire trucks head for the runway. A Cessna came in with no landing gear and landed in the dirt next to the runway. My friend turned to me and said that if he ever flies out of Burbank, he does NOT want me to take him to the airport.
