I just heard today, that Swissport in Vienna will be loosing Swiss as a customer. They still have a strong customer base including KLM and some smaller carriers, but for those who know vienna and the swiss/swissport ticket office, it will be strange to not see swiss there anymore (they now have dedicated Swiss Checkin Counters, big advertising and a own 'swiss-branded' ticket shop...)

Apparently Swiss will be handled by the respective Star Alliance member in all the Star alliance Hubs beginning Jan 1st. (AUA in VIE)
Whilst this is just a minor blow to Swissport, another question arises, whether Swiss will be able to keep up their good relations to former SAirCompanies.

Sr-Technics:
Looks good, since they also have their homebase in ZRH, actually they even get lots of Lufthansa orders now

Swissport:
Well, LH has their own ground handling, and imho it is only a matter of time until Swiss will be handled by LH ...

GateGourmet
I see similiarities to both mentioned above: While they might still give lots of business to GG on Flights ex-ZRH, Lufthansa LSG/Skychefs might be prefferred in other Locations, since they now belong to the same conglomerate.

What are your thoughts?

BR, Pat

Well, hasn't LX pretty much switched all ground handling in Germany over to LH by now? Went through TXL the other day and noticed that LX wasn't on the list of Swissport-serviced clients anymore - kinda strange. Also in LHR, I noticed that LX was handled by AZ ground staff - again, rather strange considering that it's AZ, not even LH...lowest bidder?

Well in Lisbon they were with 'portway', but will now change to the TAP-Handling, calles 'Groundforce' due to this StarAlliance 'rule'

I'm not sure, whether LH will also stop their Ground Handling in LIS, and be handled by TAP, since they have a pretty large part of the check-in in LIS... On the other hand, they are all Star...

At Swissport MAN we are loosing LX to Penauille Servisair, at the end of Feb next year. Penauille Servisair handle Lufthansa, and the reason for the move is for a better partnership for LH and LX.

Correct, they have just signed another contract for heavy checks on LH's whole A343 fleet for the winters of 2007/08 and 2008/09.

I think it's a shame they change away from Swissport. Is Servisair Cheaper? Why couldn't LH move to Swissport?
I mean, I know of course, that LX bought LH and not the other way round, but still, i suppose all options were considered, or not?

Swissport's passenger operation at Heathrow went bankrupt in 2004, and Lufthansa no longer have their own ground services at LHR. Alitalia handle quite a few airlines at Terminal 2.

You should add that they also lost British Airways, Iberia and AerLingus to FRAPORT at VIE and there is not much leftover.

Therefor I would not talk about a strong base anymore.

EvaAir, Finnair and KLM are the last " bigger" airlines left with them.

At least Swissport was able to get a contract signed by Swiss to extend it's partnership for GVA, BSL and ZRH for another 6 years until 2011.

I wonder if this Star Alliance Rule with the 'home carrier' being the one to handle all of the Star Alliance Airlines applies to Swissport - after all they are not part of Swiss...

If they handle LX customers the same way they handle KL customers then there is no wonder. Many times I have to fight them to get all boarding passes for my TATL flights on NW/KL/AF. They'd say "it's not possible Sir". Then upon me insisting and pressing the issue and saying they they did it on those and those specific dates in the past they can do it.

It's not who bought who (LH bought LX) but basically the best option as a whole is choosen. Sometimes there just isn't no visible reason for the selection of the handling agent. Sometimes it's the price sometimes it's just simple politics...  duck

When GlobeGround was still owned by LH-Group there were stations (can't say which) where LH was not handled by them but someone else.... especially on the cargo handling side.
