Buenas Noches Amigos,
It's been a while since the last Ecuador Aviation Thread, and there have been some exciting things going on beneath the Cotopaxi, right?
So to get us started, can anybody give us an update on...
- The status of the new UIO?
- Icaro's fleet and expansion news; what about that Florida flight?
- TAME's first experiences with their brand new Jungle Jets... any future fleet plans? What about the 727s that went out of service? Parked in Latacunga I suppose?

Hi Soren!
I'm glad to see a thread about Ecuador... I am not sure what's new down there at the moment, although I'll be visiting the country in the next few weeks.... I wonder what is airportmanager up to, for he will know for sure what is going on with the various airlines and whatever plans they have.... I know Icaro got rid off their F-28s, and got more B732s, so that's good.... I heard recently that Tame is getting their stuff ready to start flights to the US, but with them you never know 100% until its actually a reality.... anyways, as I go down there, I'll try to update all of those interested with whatever I'll find out... One thing for sure, I'll do some spotting this time, since I bought myself a nice little camera! UIO is awsome for spotting!
BTW, CO is sending their 777 again to GYE on Dec 24, so it would be great to see the first picture of a B777 in Ecuador for the first time.... anyone up for it????

I was in Ecuador in september. back THEN the Icaro F-28s were very active, I wonder if the 732 can fly (economically) to all destinations (like Cuenca) they used the F-28 on so far.
I flew on TAMEs E-190, very nice bright smooth aircraft.
TAMEs F-28s and 722s seem to loiter a bit around Quito, maybe they did one or two flights in total a day, while the A-320s and Embraers do 90% of their schedule.
nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?

Yes Ricariza, I knew about the airline's flights to Colombia. I was referring to additional international expansion. Buenos Aires, Bogota, Ciudad de Mexico, or even Miami if the Airbus has the range.

A 757 to the Galapagos , not what I had expected. I thought they had a small airport there. A 757 is a major plane for such a place. Quito to Miami by 757 is where I would expect that 757 to fly.

I noticed on a recent trip to Quito that the city has a Swissotel. Did Swissair ever fly to Quito?

TAME flew charter flights between UIO and CUR almost the entire year since winter season last year but they have not started the charter flights yet. Loads to CUR seem to be very good so who knows we might see TAME start scheduled flights to CUR soon? If TAME is to start charter flights to CUR again can we expect them to use the ERJ190 this time? I know they use the ERJ190 to AUA but why not to CUR? We only see the A320 if charter flights are operated to CUR. It would be nice to see their ERJ190 in CUR as well
By the way, interesting thread and where is our main source Airportmanager!!! I saw on another website that was bussy taking the famous worldwide aircraft photographer Sam Chui on a aircraft spotting tour in UIO. That must have been very nice, I would also love to go to UIO for a few days for aircraft photography. Is there an airport hotel close to the airport? As per Sam Chui's photos taken in UIO there is a hotel that gives you excellent photography opportunities from the hotel room?Â

As far as I know Swissair didn't fly to UIO, at least not since the 80s, but Swissotel is independent from Swissair so there can be a Swissotel where Swissair doesn't go. Actually, the Swissotel in Quito must have been bought recently, because I remember in the 90s it had a different name (I believe it was Hotel Oro Verde - is that correct?)
Greetings!

I doubt SR ever served UIO. However, Ecuador is a quite popular destination for Swiss tourists to visit the Amazon jungles and the Andes.

Quoting Avianca (Reply 12): how are the Aerogal flights from UIO to BOG and MDE doing, any news about it?
Yes, maybe anyone knows, would be really interesting.
How is AeroGal doing in general ? What about their MIA plans ? Didn't they want to open a sister company their to fly into the US ?

Yes, I believe you are correct.

GYE is much nicer than UIO. But if you go to UIO, make certain to take a day trip up north, just the constant changing sceneries and microclimates are worth it.

Atnight. Nice to see you cooperate with info. To help you out. ICARO Got ri of HC-CDG, Fokker 28, it left to an airline in ivory coast. The Plane was painted and overhauled in ICARO Facilities and left about two weeks ago piloted by Argentinian Pilots. I NEVER got a pic of the plane, for which I feel #&(%^!. Any way, HC-CDT,HC-CDW are still flying. Icaro has not recieved any 737 yet besides HC-CFD and CDL. Plans are still planes to bring more 732 and perhas BAE 146-200.
Icaro aslo has plans to fly to PIURA in peru with Dash 8 and F28. Quito-Cali is also planed to start on December 25th as a route with 737-200. Charters are done onces a month to CALI with 732 or Dash 8. Charters to panama are also done. The route was authorized to do a Scheduled Quito Panama with any of the three planes.
About COA 777. Im really mad, why cant they send it any other day of the year!!!!!!!! To GYE!! Its impossible for me to go to GYE to spot the 777, or maybe, but I highly doubt it
Quoting Juventus (Reply 3): Is TAME planning on starting any international flights?? would be nice to see TAME or Mexicana flying between Quito and Mexico City.
TAME wont fly to mexico, allthough it would be good, but the route isnt as demanding and now they use everyplane, everyday for the routes to be covered. TAME will get two noew A320's soon

The 757 was in the fleet for perhaps 3 months and it was a bad choice (From what my sources, very reliable ones, said in TAME). Also, it was only leased from TAESA.
Quoting Avianca (Reply 12): how are the Aerogal flights from UIO to BOG and MDE doing, any news about it?
Aparently nott good. They sell tickets 2 for the rpice of one and their 732's really have a good rate of climb on take off (If you know what i mean)

Quoting Dakota (Reply 18): From where do they plan to fly to Piura? Are there still plans for international flights to/from Cuenca? And why did they decide to fly 732's? Don't these planes seem too large for a lot of routes Icaro flies?
They plan to fly from Cuenca or Loja, to PIURA with the dash 8, which mean a 50 minute flight. I took the first fligth yesterday . Sure enjoyed spending some time in an other airport! it was a special flight to test and talk about the possibilities Very fun! Il post more whn i get home from flight school today and post pics.

Good to see you back Airportmanager, inspite your busy schedule with flight school.... I'm sure you're having a great time flying...
About TAME's new A320s, are these also leased or purchased? Also, when are they arriving, and are these additional A320s or are they replacing the existing ones since those are leased? I'm glad to see TAME expanding, but of course, being the gov's airline, they have the state backing them up.. which makes them able to get the money to expand with new airplanes.
Anyways, let us know about these, because I've not heard anything about them.
Happy flying Stefano!

If the government has money in the first place, that is. Technically this is the air force. Which still means that the money comes from the government in one way or another, but then at least it comes from the military budget which might have been used for weapons, so I definitely prefer A320s!
What I don't get, though, is why they got factory new A320s and specifically mentioned on their website that they are new, fresh, zero mileage. What's up with that? Why not buy 5 year old A320s that are still perfectly new, and get 3 used for the price of 2 new (or even more)?
I feel that it's a question of pride and prestige. Expensive pride. I've lived in Ecuador for 7 years and I have noticed multiple times that there's no money for anything, but then at totally random occasions huge fortunes are being spilled out. In private it's the same, I've seen several lower middle class families buying a brand new car with all their savings instead of getting a used one that's still fresh, for half the price.

Military or not, the president helped them get the EMB's and the A320's. new A320 will be factory sealed i hear just like CDY and CDZ, but the new ones I ehared will also be zdero milelage. I also heard they could be second hand, whcih isnt wrong, I mean, those planes wouldnt be more than 5 years old, so lets see.
It was on the news the otehr day, a scandal regarding WHY the president helped the financing of the EMB's when they were supposed to be PRVATLY payed!! Undair I say, makes you wonder why other airlines buy old 732's F-28's, 727's......
IMHO

Icaro was approved to fly to the United States. They are planning "scheduled charters", like AeroSur does (although AeroSur is switching to regular scheduled flights in January), that will probably be operated by a US airline, like Ryan International or something.
