Boeing always said there is absolutely no place for an aircraft like the A380. They said it would be too big. Then why on earth did they decide to launch the 747X program?
It seems they admit they were lying about the A380 or they just don't want to stay behind...

747X or 744LR as it is now called, is simply a 744 with 15,000 greater MTOW. Nothing more or less. The 747 X STRETCH, is a higher pax capacity plane, and with no orders yet, has not been launched. 747X Stretch is not a TRUE A3XX competitor, but more of Boeing's stop gap, and less expensive response, to a market that may or may not exist, but they lean towards not.
