This must be the destruction in Iraq of ZH876, an RAF C-130J. The aircraft was damaged but I don't know how and if I did know I probably would not be allowed to say! Note damage to port wing and damaged or missing engine. Aircraft was destroyed as too dangerous to recover and to prevent loss of sensitive equipment which could not be removed quickly. Looks like they did a pretty thorough job!

From what I remember, it was damaged beyond economical repair in a landing incident. Given it was out in the middle of the desert with lots of explosives around, the most efficient way to dispose of it was to blow it up.

Even worse Topboom, it was an -H, in the 86-XXXX serials. Crashed shortly after takeoff, and the military thought insurgents would use it as shelter/obstruction for firing on the base. Good pictoral in this month's AFM, they basically used charges to cut it into pieces, then trucked it away.

Quoting DeltaGuy (Reply 7): like they did with the AF C-130E.
They stripped down the airframe pretty well beforehand, probably because the Stryker teams were able to establish a perimiter. AFAIK the RAF loss was at a remote base, and there was no way to safely do that. Not that Lockheed is crying over it...
Much more impressive than just dropping a JDAM on the hulk like the UH-60 on July 2nd.
