For some reason, I cannot find a press release online anywhere. But on the news I heard that today, The IOC picked 3 Candidate Cities out of the original 7 Applicant Cities. The seven Applicant Cities for the XXII Olympic Winter Games 2014 were Almaty (Kazakhstan), Borjomi (Georgia), Jaca (Spain) PyeongChang (Republic of Korea), Salzburg (Austria), Sochi (Russia) and Sofia (Bulgaria).
The Candidate cities as of today are: Sochi (Russia), Salzburg (Austria), and PyeongChang (Republic of Korea).
The final decision on the host city for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games will be taken by the IOC Session in July 2007 in Guatemala City.

IIRC, Pyeongchang was the city that almost beat Vancouver out in the last vote. Leads me to believe they would be the frontrunner at least for now.

Ok, thanks, just looked it up....Pyeongchang County (Pyeongchang-gun) is a county in Gangwon Province, South Korea. It is located in the Taebaek Mountains region, and is home to a number of Buddhist temples, including Woljeongsa.
Pyeongchang bid to be the host of the 2010 Winter Olympics. It won the first round of votes with 51 against Vancouver's 40 and Salzburg's 16, but lost out 53 to 56 in the final ballot to Vancouver.

I agree, I think Austria would be a great host country for the Olympic Games. Compared to Salzburg, I think Sochi and PyeongChang lack the winter "spirit". You don't really think of winter when you here of those two cities.

It will be Salzburg unless Sochi sends alot of "presents" to the IOC
If anyone has been to Sochi - it is a SUMMER holiday destination I have a cottage about 60km from Sochi and in the winter it does not go below -3 degrees CELSIUS! There are almost no existing facilities in the city because of its small population (especially in the winter). Most of the outdoor venues would have to take place at Krasnaya Polyana (30km north of Sochi - in the mountains). I just don't see how they can stage a winter olympics there. Summer - yes, winter - good luck.
Don't worry, it was much funnier in 1992 (I think) when Leningrad was on the ballot for the winter olympics and did not make it because there was one little problem - the nearest mountains were 2 hours away...by plane

Bah humbug.
I've stopped watching the Olympics - too much flag waving (who cares who wins the most golds anyway) and too much advertising of seriously bad products. I much prefer to hit the slopes myself, beat my own personal best and quaff a few brews of my choice at the bar afterwords.
Good Luck to Vancouver, I hope it doesn't destroy you.

I think the games will go to Korea. The reason being the 2006 winter games were just in Torino (Europe), 2010 will be in Vancover (North America) so it would make sense that 2014 will be in Korea (Asia).
If we think about the summer games for a moment, it seems to work the same way. The 2004 games were in Athens (Europe), 2008 will be in Beijing (Asia) and 2012 will be in London (Europe), therefore I would expect the 2016 games back in North America. It didnt surprise me that the 2012 games didnt go to North America, because Vancover is having the 2010 Winter games, and I believe they dont try to schedule 2 consecutive games on the same continent. Would be nice if the games eventually went back to either South America or Africa. Australia had them recently in 2000

I bet 2016 will be either Africa or Latin America. I hope they go to South Africa, which to be fair is the only country in Africa with even a remote shot at getting them.

Quoting LO231 (Reply 17): Sochi???? The one on the Black Sea summer resort???? Winter Games????
The idea there was that the venues will take place in Krasnaya Polyana, which is located outside the city. Krasnaya Polyana actually does have absolutely great and gorgeous slopes, and can easily host the Olympic Games if the next 7 years are spent upgrading the facilities and building hotels.

By the time we get around to bidding again it will be nearly 20 years since Sydney anyway. There will be no bid in this country for the winter games probably ever or the summer games for atleast another 10+ years.

Maybe the IOC members forgot to notice that. They were too busy counting bribes.
