San Francisco has abandoned their bid to be the host of the 2016 Summer Olympics. The 49ers have decided to move to San Jose, and therefore the potential stadium went out the window. That leaves Chicago and Los Angeles as the final two cities vying to be selected by the USOC as the US bid city.
Even though I live in LA, I thought the Olympics in the Bay Area would be really great. Of course, now I hope LA wins. According to the article, we already have venues in place for every event except shooting.

I guess the Prado Olympic Shooting Park is out of the question by now. I drive by it every time I go to the Chino airport to the Planes of Fame Air Museum. I have been shooting there a few times with my dad (who actually went to some of the shooting events there back in '84) and I must say it doesn't seem to have the luster I assume it would have back in '84 (I was born in 1984 so I couldn't really speak from experience). But it would be great to get the games back in LA. We still light the Olympic torch in the coliseum during the 4th quarter of USC football games. Although there isn't a track anymore so I wonder where they would have the track and field? Maybe the home depot center (I think they have track and field stuff there).

San Francisco is probably my favorite major city in the US. They would in my opinion make the best spot, as it does not get too hot and is quite beautiful (shows off America quite well). Even though I come from Atlanta, Ga, that was a bad place and I admit it. Those two options now on the plate are also quite wretched and foulish I must say.

I was supporting SFO. They have placed bids so many times and lost everytime. It would be an amazing place to have an olympics.
LA has hosted twice Chicago actually once in 1904 but it was then switched to St. Louis.
I will put my support to Chicago. The Blues Brothers in the opening ceremony would be awesome.
The chances for a US winner are higher in this bid.
1984 = North America/South America (LA)
1988 = Asia (Seoul)
1992 = Europe (Barcelona)
1996 = US (Atlanta)
2000 = Asia/Oceania (Sydney)
2004 = Europe (Athens)
2008 = Asia/Oceania (China)
2012 = Europe (London)
2016 = North/South America (?)
Other 2016 bids (official and under study): Tokyo, Rio de Janeiro, Dubai, Hamburg vs Berlin, Baku, Nairobi, Monterrey (Mexico), Montreal, Madrid, Amsterdam vs Rotterdam, Lisbon, Rome, St. Petersburg, Tel Aviv, Bangkok, Santiago (Chile), Qatar, and New Delhi
Minneapolis/St. Paul (Has bid 4 times in the past) has started a feasibility for 2020. But I think that 2020 will be in Asia. Nagoya will try again then (Lost in 1988 to Seoul).
Yes...I am not a KIX fan. Let's Japanese Aviation!

For me, I don't care if the Summer Olympics are EVER held in the USA again. The costs for the host cities for security, the building of new stadiums and other facilities taking away from other needs (like schools), the affects on the business economy (many businesses shut down during them for security and access needs), the political hassles and the limited long time benefit of Summer Olympics negate any alleged benefits. At least some sanity has prevailed in San Francisco.

I agree. the alleged benefits of hosting an Olympic games are no longer worth the hassle of hosting them.
Besides, I'd rather travel to another country to see the games.

The real reason: Because the IOC could not be persuaded to give EVERYONE medals. After all "You're all winners in our eyes"
Oh yeah! And they don't want the winter Olympics either since they found out that the biathlon uses GUNS!
Happiness is not seeing another trite Ste. Maarten photo all week long.

That's one reason I think LA has a decent shot. The facilities are already in place. In fact, since 1984, a lot of new facilities have been created for events (Staples Center, Galen Center, Home Depot Center, etc.). No need for huge capital outlays.
I think one other advantage LA might have over Chicago is the weather in the summer. Having visited Chicago in the Summer, it can be miserably hot and humid.
On the other hand, Chicago has the "new city" factor, and it's a great city. But if London can be selected (after having hosted the Olympics a couple of times before), I don't see why LA can't.

I do think the selected city will be in either North or South America. NBC, which has paid huge $$$ to broadcast the Olympics, suffers when the events are half way around the world. They'll be pushing STRONGLY to get a city in the Western Hemisphere from a time zone (& ratings) perspective. After Sydney, Athens, Beijing, and London, it will be time for a Summer Olympics in the Western Hemisphere.
That would leave, I guess, Rio, Santiago, Monterrey, Montreal, or the US city.

The other reason LA has a decent shot at landing the games, is that by 2016, it probably won't be part of the US!

Oh, we'll still be part of the US. You'll just have to be able to speak Spanish to visit.
