Or maybe, since they wanted to leave room between the 340 and the 3xx for intermediate-sized aircraft, in the belief (logical) that it was unlikely that they'd go any larger than the 380-family.

They chose the designation 380 because the plane is essentially two 340 fuselages stacked on top of each other (at least that's what Airbus says).

someone wrote about that the days after the relase of the name. It wasn't A350 because it was to close to A340. I don't remeber why it wasn't A360 but 7 I think was a number for bad luck in Asia, where Airbus will sell most of the new A380's. 8 is a luck number in Asia and it's twice the size of an A340.
