I ran across this article on the Fenstar 50, a UAV with a ducted fan: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/08/27/gfs_saucers_to_get_serious/. Here is the company website: http://www.gfsprojects.co.uk/

The interesting wrinkle is that the fan doesn't just blow air straight through. Air is directed over the curved upper surface of the vehicle, using the coanda effect to reduce pressure above the vehicle. "Ordinary" ducted fan hovervehicles simply play rocket.

I wonder what this could mean for flying cars...

Looks pretty cool to me. And this small thing is flying pretty good and stable and high.

Another step closer towards flying cars Big grin

Hmmm......

Have you heard of the Avrocar?

http://www.virtuallystrange.net/ufo/mufonontario/avro/avrocar.html

Very similar concept, except the Avrocar was designed to carry a man...
